Abstract (EN)

Ill BUILDING SIMULATION PROGRAMS and ENERGY PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS (M.Sc.Thesis) Gülsu ULUKAVAK GAZI UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY September 2001 ABSTRACT Approximately one third of primary energy supply is consumed in buildings, since electro-mechanical systems like lighting, heating, ventilating and air- conditioning of spaces consume most of the building energy. It is vital that thermal performance of building with its systems as a whole should be well evaluated and optimised in order to achieve energy efficient buildings. Because all building systems are interrelated and interdependent and determine the energy performance of the building. From this point of view, building simulation programs which have realised a fast development parallel with the information technologies in recent years, carry a great potential for experts responsible of design, production and management of the buildings. Building energy performance simulation is a powerful tool to analyse how the form, size, orientation and type of building systems affect over-all building energy consumption. This information is assential for making informed design decisions about building systems that impact energy use, including envelope; i.e. walls, glazing, roofs, slabs, etc., lighting and HVAC. The aim of this thesis is to present the recent improvements in the field of building simulation programs, to discuss how/why computer simulationIV systems can/should be used for evaluation pf building energy performance and to demonstrate with a case study. Ankara Vakıf bank Bahçelievler Building is modelled with both ECOTECT which is a conceptual design tool and Power-DOE which is a detailed energy analysis tool to perform the energy profile of building, to reveal the different approaches of different simulation tools and their impacts on design criterias. In the conclusion of this study, the results are discussed and compared with the results of the modifications at the building model as to improve the energy performance of office buildings.
