Research on the perspective evaulation of social work with patients who are diagnosed bipolar disorder and schizophrenia: Sample of Kütahya

This research is a study carried out in order to reveal the social work practices that bipolar disorder and schizophrenia patients need in the context of the relationship between psychiatry and social work, and to evaluate them from a social work perspective. The phenomenon of health and illness is as old as human history. Considering that health is a physical and mental well-being, individuals with psychiatric diseases cannot be evaluated in the case of healthy individuals. When viewed psychiatrically, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia are the main diseases that are considered as severe mental disorders. These diseases are explained by various disciplines in accordance with their own perspectives. While explaining bipolar disorder and schizophrenia disease, we should also mention the beneficiaries suffering from this disease. Therefore, revealing the problems experienced by individuals with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia and the social service interventions they need are among the main goals of this research. All of the volunteer individuals participating in the study consist of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia patients. The universe of research is bipolar disorder and schizophrenia patients in Turkey. The study universe consists of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia patients located in Kütahya province who agreed to participate in the research. The study was conducted with 25 volunteer participants with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia in Kütahya. Eight women and 17 men volunteers participated in the study. Qualitative research type was used while conducting the research. In the research, sociodemographic information form was used. The data were analyzed by qualitative research analysis technique. In the findings obtained as a result of the research, it was observed that bipolar disorder and schizophrenia affects the dimensions of family functions, individual functions, problem solving, coping skills, communication, and general functions negatively. In addition, it reveals the social service intervention programs that bipolar disorder and schizophrenia patients need. Suggestions for the evaluation of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia diseases from a social work perspective are also included. Therefore, as a result of the study, important findings were obtained for the field of social work.
