Evaluation of the effect of stress levels of nurses working in a public hospital on work motivation

This study, which examined the effect of stress levels on work motivation of nurses working in a public hospital, was conducted at Kartal Koşuyolu Yüksek İhtisas Training and Research Hospital in 2022. The type of this research is cross-sectional research. A total of 449 nurses work at Kartal Koşuyolu Heart Hospital. By calculating the sample size, it was aimed to reach at least 225 people. Participants were determined by using the simple random sample selection method. Among the 225 people initially determined in the study, those who did not agree to participate in the research or could not be reached for reasons such as permission, were replaced by the same sample selection method and were completed. While collecting data in the research, a survey form consisting of 3 parts was used. Descriptive personal information questions were used in the first part of the survey form, work motivation scale was used in the second part and perceived stress was used in the third part. Surveys were conducted by interviewing the research participants one-on-one and obtaining their consent. During the face-to-face interview, questions that the participants did not understand were explained. It was found that 80.4% of the nurses participating in the research were female and 19.5% were male. The majority of the participating are female nurses. In the research, 84.44% of nurses do not recommend their profession to students, while only 15.55% recommend their profession to students. According to the research, female nurses were found to be more motivated than male nurses. In the study, nurses in the older age group were found to be more motivated than younger nurses. It is thought that the reason for this is the difference in age or the different in age or the different expectations of young nurses in life. The study concluded that nurses' high weekly working hours, working on weekends, night shifts and insufficient wages reduce their motivation. According to the research, the unit where nurses work also affects their motivation levels. As a result of the research, it is recommended to reduce nurses' monthly working hours, number of night and weekend shifts and regulate their salaries. The units where nurses work if they are not happy should be changed.
