Abstract (EN)

In this study, it is aimed to determine the hazards and risks in marble quarries and marble processing plants where occupational accidents occur frequently. Within the scope of the study, the current situation of the privately owned marble processing plant in İscehisar district of Afyonkarahisar province and the open marble quarry of the same company in Altıntaş district of Kütahya province, in which there is intensive labor work force, were examined in terms of occupational health and safety. The datas for the study were collected using field observations, interviews with official people and employees methods. According to these informations by taking into account existing risk assessment too, risk assessment studies were carried out in both workplaces according to the 5X5 L Matrix Risk Assessment Method, which is widely used in occupational health and safety risk assessment. In the second stage of the study, the 5X5 L Matrix Risk Assessment Method, which stands out due to outstanding ease of use, is compared with the 3T Matrix Risk Assessment Method, which adopts a proactive approach in occupational health and safety, negative aspects were identified and improvement studies were carried out. In relation to this, data from the 5X5 L Matrix Risk Assessment Method has been converted to the 3T Matrix Risk Assessment Method. After the conversion, Improved Module Safety Index (İMGE in Turkish acronym) values were calculated from the data obtained, development based on the Module Safety Index systematics in the 3T Matrix Risk Assessment Method. This procedure was also applied to the data obtained from the 5X5 L Matrix Risk Assessment Method at the next phase. In the phase, the approach of leveling the İMGE values in both risk assessment methods has been developed and this approach has been named as Module Security Level (MGS in Turkish acronym). Thus, the negativities detected in the calculation of Module Security Index in 3T Matrix Risk Assessment Method were eliminated, İMGE approach and Module Security Level (MGS) systematic, which is based on the datas obtained as a result of İMGE approach, was developed. İMGE and MGS values were determined to be 42,85 (lower middle) and 44,01 (lower middle) in the marble quarry, 48,05 (lower middle) and 62,97 (upper middle) in the marble processing plant, respectively, according to 5X5 L Matrix Risk Assessment Method and 3T Matrix Risk Assessment Method as a result of three different classifications. Accordingly, the difference between the İMGE values in the marble processing plant was higher than the IMGE values in the marble quarry. However, since the MGS levels corresponding to these values are at both moderate levels (48,05-lower intermediate and 62,97-upper intermediate), they did not affect the overall MGS level and it is assumed that the application of these two approaches to the 5X5 L Matrix Risk Assessment Method gives this 5X5 L Risk Assessment Method a proactive feature.
