Abstract (EN)

The increase in port traffic and maritime trade brings along an increasing amount of waste originating from ships. Most countries implement the MARPOL 73/78 Convention along with its annexes and require their ports to establish a waste reception facility in order to collect ship-sourced waste and cargo waste in order to prevent possible marine pollution. However, the ships are not generating or delivering waste at the desired rate, that is, below the capacity of the Waste Acceptance Facility. Due to the insufficient amount of collected waste, most waste reception facilities in Turkey have excess capacity. Therefore, most facilities are either idle or out of service. In addition, the smaller the treated volume, the higher the unit processing cost for waste reception and treatment facilities. Therefore, it has been determined that it would be appropriate to combine the waste reception and handling activities in a region to collect and operate the wastes through a single facility.
