A general look at the relation of personal transports and environment on the basis of industrial design

Prof. Füsun CURAO?LU 2004, 91 pages Environmental problems have reached critical phases on national and international dimensions. Their negative effects have begun to crystallize. The responsibilities of industrial designers are also increasing, regarding the products they produce and their usage. This thesis is presented in order to propose an infrastructure for the strategies that shall be developed by Turkey's improving automotive sector against environmental problems. The thesis comprises of six parts: In part one, concepts regarding environment and environmental problems are identified, examples of institutions and organizations established against environmental hazards are mentioned. In part two, the concept of pollution is defined, different forms of pollution is specified and the effects of pollutions on human health is analysed. In part three, the harms of transport vehicles on the environment is discussed on the basis of cause and effect, according to the different types of transportation systems. In part four, the history, the technological evolution and the improving social role of the automobile as an industrial product and an individual means of transport is discussed. In part five, the alternative technologies that have been developed in order to lessen the harms of the individual transports on the environment.are surveyed, the activities of the major automobile producers on this matter is evaluated. In part six, an interview with the concerned authorities in Türkiye Otomobil Fabrikaları A.Ş., one of the major companies of Turkey in the automotive field is discussed within the scope of this thesis.
