Abstract (EN)

In recent years, chemosensors for selective detection of metal ions have attracted great attention. Aluminium is the third most abundant metal on earth which has been widely used for many purposes in modern life. In this study, a Schiff base compound bis-N-N'(salicylidene)-1,4-butanediamine (1,4-Ligand) and its reduced derivative were synthesized and their fluorescence sensitivity to various metal ions in ethanol:water mixture was investigated. Schiff base sensor showed selective fluorescent enhancement towards Zn2+ and Al3+ ions at different excitation and emission wavelengths. The similar fluorescent emission behaviours for the ligand+metal mixtures have also been detected under the UV light. Additionally, the parameters such as solvent effect, fluorescence time of response, optimum pH and ligand concentration have also been determined. The studies related to the effect of other metal ions on the fluorescence properties of ligand+Zn and ligand+Al mixtures demonstrated that Al3+, Cu2+, Fe3+ and Cr3+ interfered with Zn2+ dedection, whereas Hg2+, Fe3+ ve Cu2+ showed interference in the determination of Al3+ ions. On the contrary, reduced derivative of the Schiff base did not give fluorescence response against any metal ions. Keywords: Aluminium, Chemosensor, Fluorescence spectroscopy, Schiff base.
