Abstract (EN)

INVESTIGATION OF THE REOLOGICAL AND FILTRATION PROPERTIES OF THE BORON DERIVATIVES DOPED DRILLING MUD (M. Sc. Thesis) Behlül Merve SEBÜKTEKİN ISKENDERUN TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE INSTITUTE May 2019 ABSTRACT Drilling mud is always a topic that is studies on because it composes the biggest cost of oil exploration. With the addition of various additivies, the efforts to improve the rheolgoical and filtration properties of the drilling mud continue to increase day by day. In this study, water based drilling mud, which is the most widely used type of drilling mud in oil exploration was prepared and in to the prepared drilling mud sodium borate group mineral borax (Na2B4O7.10H2O) having a particle size of 45 μm, sodium-calcium borate group mineral ulexite (NaCaB5O9.8H2O) having a particle size of 75 μm and calcium borate group mineral colemanite (Ca2B6O11.5H2O) with a particle size of 100 μm were added in different concantrations (1-5 % w/v). Then drilling mud samples prepared by adding boron minerals plastic viscosity (PV), apparent viscosity (AV), gel strength, such as the rheological properties FANN 35 Viscometer, water loss and cake thickness, such as filtration properties of the American Petroleum Institute (API) fluid loss test equipment used analyzed in detail. All measurement were carried out according to American Petroleum Institute (API) standard. Besides, chemical and morphological properties of prepared drilling mud samples were determined with X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) devices. The rheological and filtration of drilling mud wich is prepared by adding borax, ulexite and colemanite seperately was compared with firstl among themselves and then with each other and finally with the püre water based drilling mud. It has been determined that boron minerals contribute positively to the rheological properties of drilling mud. It shows that borax and colemanite have a better effect than ulexite. Minerals was determined that compared to water based drilling mud, the additionof boron minerals to the mud results were within the reference value range although it increased the sludge filtration rate and cake thickness.
