Bülent Ecevit in the Cyprus peace operation

Bülent Ecevit was born in Istanbul in 1925. Since 1950, he had published his articles about art and politics at Ulus Gazetesi, which was the official journal of the Republican People's Party. Bülent Ecevit had actively stepped in politics' scene as a member of the CHP in 1951, and later became party's General Secretariat in 1966 with the help of his famous statement "Left of the Middle". Then he has gone trough to Party Chairman in 1972 with his "democratic" attitude against the military memorandum on March 12th. The elections on October 14, 1973, have been resulted with the victory of Ecevit and the CHP. The CHP government, which has long been in opposition, has finally reached to power as government with the coalition established by the National Salvation Party. During this period of reconciliation between the two parties, the CHP has signed the initiatives to increase its prestige under the leadership of Ecevit. Especially, decisions taken by Ecevit about foreign policy and relations, in particular during the "Cyprus Peace Operation", increased the prestige of our country at the international arena and revealed its determination. Ecevit's critical "Cyprus Peace Operation" decision on 20 July 1974, in spite of the distraction policy of Britain and the United States and Greece's "Enosis" policy, provided the prevention of genocide attempts on the Turkish side of the island. By doing so, Ecevit put an end to the force imbalance created by tyranny and unfair ways in Cyprus and he has reopened the path of democracy and freedom that has been persecuted by dictatorship. Ecevit's "non-emotional" and "honest", "open" and "consistent" personality during the war time brought him to an extraordinary prestige enabling him to proceed over where at 1964 İnönü and at 1967 Demirel had to stepped back. Especially the "humanitarian", "sincere", "peaceful" and "responsible" diplomatic behavior that has been drawn up on behalf of the peace in and around Cyprus by Ecevit deserves praise. In addition, Ecevit's stand on his ground in Cyprus has shown to the whole world that he is one of the faithful heir of the Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, as following his the national sovereignty and complete independence philosophy.
