Abstract (EN)

Objective: In this study, it is aimed to provide the treatment of earwax by applying (1:1, v.v) the mixture of 6% hydrogen peroxide and glycerine on the patients suffering from earwax and compare with glycerine without any need for washing.Methods:. This research was executed on the patients whose ears were infected by earwax and came to Otorhinolaryngology Polyclinics of İzmir Bozyaka Education and Research Hospital of Ministry of Health. Study was completed on 86 patients who had the glycerine drop treatment and 85 patients who had the treatment of the mixture of 6% hydrogen peroxide and glycerine (most efficacious) with the total number of 171 patients. Drops were applied as three times in a day, ten drops at a time along a week for the patients in both groups. Patients were called for an examination one week later. A questionnaire was applied to the patients before and after the treatment, and earwax scores together with their complaints were recorded. No more treatment was applied for the patients with 0 (zero) score, whereas irrigation with water was done on the patients who continued to suffer earwax according to the practices of Otorhinolaryngology Polyclinics of İzmir Bozyaka Education and Research Hospital.Data were assessed via SPSS 13.0 statistical programme. As the statistical analysis; descriptive analysis (percent, frequency, average), chi-square test, student?s t test on independent groups, student?s t test and Mann Whitney on dependent groups were used. Results: Earwax is completely removed from the 19.11% of the patients on which the treatment of the mixture of 6% hydrogen peroxide and glycerine (1:1, v:v) was applied. Earwax is completely removed from the 6.91% of the patients on which the glycerine treatment was applied. There were significant statistical differences (p=0,004). The total decrease in the earwax score of the patients with the treatment of the mixture of 6% hydrogen peroxide and glycerine (1:1, v:v) is 30,87% whereas the total decrease in this score is 14.45% for the patients with glycerine drop treatment. There were significant statistical differences (p=0,002).Conclusion: It is determined that the mixture of 6% hydrogen peroxide and glycerine is effective in the complete removal of earwax and decreasing the earwax scores together with declining the necessity of earwash on the patients.Key words: Earwax, ear, therapy
