Abstract (EN)

This thesis explores the representation of multicultural transformation in late twentieth-century Britain in Hanif Kureishi's The Buddha of Suburbia (1990) and Zadie Smith's White Teeth (2000) in terms of borders and border crossings. As a consequence of decolonisation and the Second World War, the border phenomenon has moved beyond its traditional meaning, and social, cultural and conceptual boundaries in multicultural societies have become the focus of border studies. Especially at the end of the twentieth century, borders started to be examined not as lines separating countries and societies but as contact zones where two different cultures merged and hybridised. The Buddha of Suburbia and White Teeth show that racial and cultural prejudices inherited from the imperial and colonial past draw invisible boundaries in contemporary Britain. Nevertheless, both novels imagine crossing the invisible borders through everyday cross-cultural dialogue, interaction and influence and are hopeful for Britain's multicultural future. This study examines the representation of borders and border crossings in multicultural Britain in light of the "postimperial melancholia" and "conviviality" that Paul Gilroy offered to multicultural studies. Presenting the border-making and border-crossing processes in society simultaneously, these multicultural novels appeal to mainstream English readers and diasporic readers. Thus, these novels, which enable the reader to empathise with the other by crossing the borders created by colonial history, and racial and cultural prejudices, contribute to the convivial multicultural transformation process.
