Abstract (EN)
This master's thesis comprehensively investigates the inventory, ecology, and habitat characteristics of the red wood ant (Formica rufa L.) within the boundaries of the Çamkoru Dr. Fuat ADALI Research Forest Engineering area. The primary aim of the study is to reveal the stand structure, topographic, and environmental factors influencing the distribution of red wood ant nests; to determine nest volumes; and to emphasize the ecological importance of this species within forest ecosystems. Statistical analyses revealed significant relationships between nest presence and various environmental factors. The results indicated that nests are more densely concentrated in areas with moderate to full canopy cover, productive stands, shaded aspects, low slopes, and higher elevations. Additionally, nest volume was found to be most influenced by canopy cover, developmental stage, stand characteristics, and elevation. This research not only contributes meaningfully to the limited body of literature on Formica rufa ecology in Turkey but also aims to provide a solid scientific foundation for forest management and biological control strategies.
