Spatial analysis of prison buildings in the context of deterrence and rehabilitation: An interior study aimed at reintegrating offenders into society

The development of different design forms, whether successful or not, has a relationship with prison architecture history. Every person who is sentenced to prison as a result of a crime is there to receive a penalty designed to deter them from committing more crimes, keep them away from society, and make it easier for them to rejoin it following their release through rehabilitation. The interior design of these institutions, which are wholly cut off from society, transforms into the prisoner's environment. The core components of prison interior architecture, which address the need for resocialization of people left in unhygienic situations with subpar physical circumstances, are an important factor that shouldn't be disregarded. Can reintegrating prisoners into society after their release therefore be improved by embracing interior architectural features in prisons? Interior space design and the function of incarceration should not be separated because the realization of the imprisonment function depends on the provision of the physical environment. This study has investigated useful interior architectural functions within this framework, focusing on jail conditions, to enable vulnerable convicts to live in humane surroundings, develop into healthy people, and reintegrate into society. The notions of crime and punishment have been scrutinized in this context, raising questions about the causes of criminal behavior from the beginning of the sentence to the definition of crime in the criminal code. The challenges of modern prisons have been discussed, and it has been examined how the adoption of a contemporary jail interior design can result in changes. Historical advances in prison interiors from the past to the present have been given.
