Çeviriler yoluyla kültür transferi: Okot P'bitek'in Song of Lawino ve Song of Ocol'u; bir Uganda örneği

The aim of the present study is to investigate the role of translation in the culture transfer in the postcolonial texts. To achieve this aim, the study focuses on the prominent poems of Okot p'Bitek, Song of Lawino (1966) and Song of Ocol (1967), and the Turkish translation entitled Lawino'nun Türküsü (1996) by Yusuf Eradam and Güler Siper. The theory of postcolonial translation is taken as the theoretical framework of the study which also consists of other concepts such as "hybridity" (Bakhtin, 1981; Bhabha, 1984). The methodological tools which are employed in the present study are "translation procedures" proposed by Jean-Paul Vinay and Jean Darbelnet (Vinay and Darbelnet, 1958) and "paratexts" introduced by Gerard Genette (Genette, 1997). Furthermore, the interviews with Yusuf Eradam, one of the translators of the Turkish translation and Frank Horley, the designer of the illustrations included in Song of Lawino and Song of Ocol are utilized to expand on the translation analysis. The excerpts chosen from the English source text and its Turkish translation are compared under the titles of borrowings, calques, literal translations, equivalences, adaptations and explicitations with the aim of highlighting the culture transfer in the process. The findings of the study emphasize the fact that translation has a crucial role in reflecting the cultural elements of African society in distant languages and cultures.
