Turkish adaptation and psychometric features of the needs of children questionnaire (NCQ) scale

ABSTRACT Seray POLAT, Turkish Adaptation and Psychometric Properties of Needs of Children Questionnaire, Program of Nursing, Master's Thesis, Gaziantep, 2024. This thesis study was methodologically designed to adapt to our culture and psychometrically test the Needs of Children Questionnaire (NCQ) scale, which was developed to measure the psychosocial, physical and emotional needs of school-age children (7-12 years old) hospitalized due to chronic diseases, through self-report in the hospital. The data of our research was collected by face-to-face interview method between 06 September 2023 and 31 June 2024. The population of the research consisted of patients hospitalized in Gaziantep Şahinbey Research and Application Hospital. The sample group consisted of 300 school-age children with chronic diseases who were hospitalized in the pediatric services of Gaziantep University Children's Hospital, which is an annex building affiliated with this hospital, and who went to any educational institution (n=300). The scale, developed by Foster M. et al. in 2019, includes 4 subscales and 16 items. Ya bu ya da bu bence kırmızı olan The scale includes 4 subscales and 16 items. In the study, first of all, the translation-back-translation method was used for language validity, and content validity was made with expert opinions, and the Davis Technique was used for content validity. Content Validity Index I-CVI values between the items were found to be between 0.80-1.0. The grand total ICV value was determined as 0.96. The construct validity of the scale was performed using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) (SPSS 21 package program). In this context, in the analysis of the data included in the study, the KMO value was found to be 0.72 for the importance sub-dimension and 0.74 for the fulfilment sub-dimension, and it was determined that the number of samples was at an acceptable level. It was carried out with Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and fit indices (LISREL 8.8 package program). When looking at the results; It was found that the scale items were between 0.39-0.88, the eigenvalue of the sub-dimensions and the total scale was over 1%, the variances in the sub-dimensions and the total variance were over 5%, and the total variance value of the scale was over 52%. In evaluating the reliability of the scale, parallel form reliability was applied to examine the relationship between the "Identification of Hospital Needs from the Child's Perspective Scale" and "Evaluation of Quality Of Care From Childrens Point of View:" and it was observed that there was a strong correlation between the two scales. As a result, it has been determined that the Evaluation of Quality Of Care From Childrens Point of View has a similar structure to the original scale, has high validity and reliability, and is an adequate tool for determining hospital needs through children's self-reports.
