Abstract (EN)

This thesis study was carried out to toxicologically examine children's finger paints and to evaluate the risk factors for health. 12 different brands of yellow and red finger paints were purchased and analyzed by HET-CAM method to perform skin irritation test. As a result of the research, it was determined that non of the paints had the potential to cause irritation. Microbiological analysis of the samples inoculated on days 2, 7, 14 and 28 was performed. As a result of incubation of microorganisms for Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, logarithmic reduction of > log 2 on 2nd day and logarithmic reduction of > log 3 on 7th day were observed. No increase was observed till 28th day. For Candida albicans and Aspergillus brasiliensis, logarithmic reduction of >log 2 on 14th day was observed. In addition, finger paints are obliged not to contain inherently hazardous substances such as heavy metals, as specified in Chapter 7 of the Toy Safety Standard. Health Sciences University, Gulhane Faculty of Pharmacy analyzed the samples by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) for their heavy metal content. As a result of the analysis of 12 different brands of yellow and red finger paints, it was found that almost all brands contained Hg, Pb, Ni, As, Cd, Sb heavy metals. This situation reflects the situation in Turkey and fulfills the purpose of the study. Finger paints, which are not recognized as cosmetic products in the Republic of Turkey and and all over the world, are not considered to be safe, especially for children, due to their skin contact. As a result, it is thought that finger paints should be subjected to a much more comprehensive examination and the Republic of Turkey should establish a more comprehensive standard for finger paints or the scope of the existing standard should be expanded. This research is expected to raise awareness by demonstrating the importance of the issue. Key words: Paint, Finger Paint, Heavy Metal, Health, Safety
