Abstract (EN)

There are also many disadvantages besides the advantages of multi-story reinforced concrete structures, which are widely used today. One of these disadvantages is the weight of the structure. In reinforced concrete structures composed of ready-mixed concrete and steel, the structural weight can rise to very high levels. This situation may also cause great changes in both earthquake behavior of the structure and its interaction with soil. Especially in case the structural weight and height are high, it can be stated that earthquake behavior can be problematic and structural damage can occur in relatively loose and soft subsoil conditions. Although there are some disadvantages of steel structures compared to reinforced concrete structures, since the use of steel bearing system reduces the weight of the structure, the effect of the earthquake on the structure also reduces. In addition, as the result of the decrease in the weight of the structure, since there will be reductions in the loads transferred to the foundation soil, the cost of soil improvement also reduces. The main purpose of this study is to make structural analysis of a multi-story structure having reinforced concrete and steel bearing systems considering the soil classes defined in 2018 Turkey Building Earthquake Code, and to compare these structures in terms of cost. In line with this purpose, the study consists of four main parts. In the first chapter, general information about the historical development of reinforced concrete and steel structures and the loads acting on these types of structures, literature investigations, and the aim and scope of the study are given. In the second part, the design features and structural modellings of the reinforced concrete and steel structures to be analyzed are mentioned, and by calculating the spectrum values according to the soil classes defined in 2018 Turkey Building Earthquake Code, the structural analyses are performed. Furthermore, the estimations of the load and quantity obtained depending on the analyses carried out are compared. In the third section, the systems analyzed are examined in terms of the load, cost and variation of soil properties. In the fourth chapter, conclusions obtained from the study and suggestions are given. This chapter is followed by references list and autobiography. The obtained results shows that the behavior and cost of the structural systems can vary depending on the weight of the structure, the construction material, the earthquake loads, the bearing system of the structure, the local soil conditions and the foundation type. In this context, it is of utmost importance that these parameters are taken into account in the design stage for an accurate and reliable design.
