Abstract (EN)
Soft cohesive and loose chesionless soils have little bearing capacity. It means that such kinds of soil may not suitably to found structures built on them provided certain conditions are met such as seismic loads and heavy buildings. Therefore, in practice the foundation system, which is designed for such kinds of soil becomes often the pile foundation. It would be misleading in the coarse of pile foundation design to consider axial loading only. This is because constructions may be exposed to horizontal loadings, such as earthquakes and winds in addition to axial loads. Lateral load analysis of pile foundations should be made taking pile-soil interaction into account. This can be achieved using nonlinear soil-pile load-deformation curves. This thesis discusses the plotting of p-y curves for a horizontally loaded pile in a layer of sandy soil via the method developed by Reese and the modification and simplification of the Reese method. In this context the aim is to ensure that the modified and simplified ultimate soil resistance equations in Reese model be introduced into the scope of engineering and be commonly used in design of pile foundation. The modified and simplified Reese model is compared with the original Reese model for a single pile in an idealized soil profile in Karşıyaka-Bostanlı area. It is confirmed that the difference between p-y curves by suggested simple equations and those by the modified ones is negligible. Suggested equations can be used in practice without introducing further empricism.
