A conversation analytic approach to L1 use in EFL classes

There has always been an ongoing debate on using L1 in EFL classes. Even though there are different points of view, code-switching plays an important role in language learning process. The purpose of this study is to discover the pedagogical functions of code-switching in EFL classes. The classes in both A1 and A2 levels were video recorded. This video recorded data then was transcribed in terms of conversation analysis principles. The transcribed data provided evidence on both teacher's and students' code-switching in A1 and A2 level EFL classes. The study made it possible to conclude that L1 use is preferred by both the teacher and the students for different reasons such as grammar instruction, elaboration, translation and so on. Although it is thought that code-switching could limit the target language exposure, it could help as a useful tool to facilitate the language learning process.
