Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study was to investigate human papillomavirus (HPV) prevalence and the distribution of human papillomavirus genotypes among women attending the Department of Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine, Çukurova University. Cervical smear samples were obtained from 1017 women aged 30-64 years old. HPV genotyping was performed by the f-HPV typing Kit (Molgentix, Barcelona, Spain) which is multiplex flourescent PCR test. The prevalence of HPV was found to be 13.2% (134) in the study population. Multiple HPV infection was observed in 25.4% of HPV positive women. HPV39 was identified as the most common HPV genotype in 21.6% of HPV infected women, followed by HPV16 (20.9%), HPV51 (18.6%), HPV52 (11.9%), HPV58 (9.7%), HPV6 (9%), HPV18 (7.4%), HPV35 (7.4%), HPV11 (6%), HPV31 (6%), HPV56 (4.5%), HPV45 (4.5%), HPV68 (3.7%), HPV33 (3%), HPV59 (%1.5). HPV was detected in 12.4% of women with normal cytology and 75% of women with abnormal cytology. The prevalent HPV genotypes were HPV16 and HPV31 in precancerous lesions. The information on HPV prevalence and the distribution of HPV genotypes among women will contribute to assess the use of HPV tests in cervical cancer screening and to monitor the effectiveness of prophylactic HPV vaccines.Key words; Cervical cancer, HPV, Genotype, Precancerous lesions, Prevalans.
