Artistic and plastic analysis of paintings by women painter of the Republic period (1920-1950)

This study aims to analyze the works of female painters who produced art in Turkey between 1920 and 1950 from artistic and formal (plastic) perspectives. With the proclamation of the Republic, the changing role of women in social life was also reflected in the field of art. During this period, female painters not only made their mark with their artworks but also emerged as representatives of a new era in Turkish art history through their presence in the public sphere. n this research, works by prominent female artists of the period, selected through a literature review, were analyzed in terms of plastic elements such as composition, form, color, and texture, and the relationship between these elements and the artist's style and the aesthetic understanding of the period was interpreted. The works were also evaluated within a socio-cultural context, attempting to reveal how women developed a language of expression through art and how they constructed their identities. The findings of this research indicate that female painters of the Turkish Republican Era (1920–1950) produced works demonstrating strong individual expression and technical proficiency. While showing a sensitivity to Western art influences, these artists also developed a distinctive visual language that preserved their cultural identity. In doing so, this study contributes not only to Turkish art history but also to the broader literature on women artists. As a result of this research, more in-depth and interdisciplinary approaches to women artists will both make art history more inclusive and make the roles of women in cultural production visible.
