ABSTRACT Master Thesis DESIGN OF AN INDUCTION MOTOR DRIVE FED BY A SINGLE-PHASE AC-AC CONVERTER WITH VARIABLE FREQUANCY AND VOLTAGE Abdülcelil KÜLEKÇİO?LU Firat University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Department of Electric and Electronics Engineering 2003, Page: 64 Single-phase induction motors are widely used in industrial and household applications. A single-phase induction motor having of constant input supply voltage and frequency operates at constant speed. These motors should be supplied by the sources providing variable magnitude and frequency if they are used in the variable speed applications. Although DC-link converters can be remembered at first glance due to cost and easiness, DC- link converters realize AC-AC converting by using intermediate storage. Therefore their intermediate circuits contain bulky reactive components (inductance, capacitance). By the implication their dimensions is bigger than other AC-AC converters. On the other hand, in single-phase AC-AC direct converters the frequency transformation realized in single step without using storage elements. Moreover they also allow bi-directional power flow. However DC converters are not able to perform bi directional power flow without making the input side of converter controllable. Another advantage of single-phase AC-AC converters is that they provide high quality output waveforms at low output frequencies. Hence single-phase AC-AC converters are preferred to DC link converters in such applications. In this thesis it has been demonstrated with both simulation and experimental results that the single-phase AC-AC direct converters have more advantages than DC link converters in the applications necessitating the low output frequency.
