Abstract (EN)

Background and Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the perceived family functioning and social adaptation levels of patients with depression and its associated factors. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study included 123 patients who were diagnosed with depression in the Psychiatry Polyclinics of the Ministry of Health Edirne Sultan 1. Murat State Hospital. Data were collected using the "Questionnaire Form", "Perceived Family Functioning Scale" and "Social Adaptation Self-Assessment Scale". The data obtained in the study were evaluated using descriptive statistical methods, Independent Samples T Test, One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Pearson Correlation Coefficient and Linear Regression Analysis. Results: The mean score and standard deviation of the Perceived Family Functioning Scale of the patients participating in the study were 104.59±16.98, and the mean score and standard deviation of the Social Adaptation Self-Assessment Scale were determined to be 37.80±8.49. It was determined that as patients' perceived family functionality level scores increased, their social adaptation level scores also increased. The total Perceived Family Functioning Scale score of the patients with depression differed according to age. There were significant differences in the Perceived Family Functioning Scale sub-dimension scores according to age, income status, presence of mental illness in the family, and medication use (p<0.05). Conclusion: It was determined that the family functioning levels of patients with depression were moderate and their social adaptation levels were normal. It was determined that as the family functioning levels of patients increased, their social adaptation levels also increased. It is recommended that psychiatric nurses plan training to strengthen and improve family relationships by interviewing the families of their patients.
