Character names in the Compilation Dictionary

Character names, which reflect the rich lexicon of the Turkish language, are among the essential elements that shape the cultural values, perceptions, and social structures of societies through language. In this study, 2845 character names were identified through an examination of the Derleme Sözlüğü. Due to the polysemous nature of these names, a total of 3870 words were systematically analyzed, focusing on their linguistic functions, semantic loads, and societal roles. The character names were classified into two primary categories: those reflecting positive and negative character traits. Positive character names describe individuals who are harmonious, trustworthy, and successful, while negative character names denote individuals perceived negatively by society, possessing undesirable traits. The 3870 identified character names were further categorized under 28 positive and 72 negative main headings. In conclusion, this study aims to understand the linguistic functions and societal roles of character names in the Derleme Sözlüğü and contribute to the field of lexicography. Furthermore, it is suggested that character names in the vernacular can provide deeper insights into the cultural structure and linguistic richness of Turkish society.
