Abstract (EN)

As a multidisciplinary field, video games are an art form in which myths are adapted and can be experienced interactively. The aim of this study is to analyze the reasons for the adaptation of the heroes and elements in the mythic narratives of Greek and Scandinavian societies that lived in different times into video games comparatively through the methods of intersemiotics/intermediality. In this study, since the elements adapted from written mythic narratives, which are one sign system/media, to video games, which are another sign system/media, through intersemiotic transfer/media transformation are investigated, the joint methods of intersemiotics/intermediality are used. Since the narratives of two different myth worlds are compared with each other, moreover, the adaptations of the heroes and elements of these narratives in video games are compared, comparative literature is also utilized in the study. It is aimed to update the disciplines in which the study is conducted by investigating the myths adapted to video games with an interdisciplinary study. In the study, pantheons, underworlds, mythic narratives/sagas, heroes' journeys in two different mythic worlds were analysed. The changes and transformations through which the elements adapted to video games were put into use and why and how they were included in the narrative were analysed. While analysing mythical gods, heroes and elements, it was investigated which of the playable and non-playable character (NPC) types specific to the games they were adapted as. It was questioned whether NPCs are supporters or enemies. How different video games adapt the heroes and elements of the same mythic narratives is analysed comparatively. In conclusion, it has been determined that video games that deal with myths use mythic narratives in line with their own narratives by undergoing intersemiotic transfer/media transformation. It has been understood that the games can update and use any hero or element from mythic narratives to help or hinder their characters who embark on the hero's journey as playable characters in the worlds they have created. It has been determined that myths in video games are updated and continue to exist cyclically.
