Need analysis for development of digital addiction awareness curriculum: Secondary school level

The aim of this study is to determine the educational needs of secondary school students regarding the 'Digital Addiction Awareness Curriculum'. A mixed method research design was used in the study. Survey desing was used in the quantitative part and case study was used in the qualitative part. The study group in the qualitative part consisted of 16 school psychological counselors and expert academicians in their fields, quantitative part consisted of 306 secondary school students in Ünye/Ordu. Personal Information Form, Digital Addiction Scale for Children and Semi-Structured Interview Form were used as data collection tools. The Jamovi 2.3.24 program was used to analyze the quantitative data. Independent sample t-test and One Way ANOVA analysis were used to compare the scale scores. Content analysis method was used to analyze the qualitative data. As a result of this research, a program proposal consisting of six themes for digital addiction awareness, including the learning-teaching process and measurement-evaluation methods has emerged. Digital addiction levels of the older ones were found to be higher than the younger ones, the students studying in other schools were found to be higher than the students studying in imam hatip schools, the eighth grade students were found to be higher than the students studying in other grades, the students participating in any art activity were found to be higher than the ones who did not, the students spending more time with parents were found to be higher than the ones spending less time with parents, the students who use more digital devices have higher digital addiction levels than those who use fewer digital devices, students who use more digital devices have higher digital addiction levels than those who use less, and students who use phones and IT devices have higher digital addiction levels than those who don't use.
