vEFFECT OF VARIOUS MEDIA ON TOOTH ENAMEL AND FLUORIDEDETERMINATION(M.Sc. Thesis)Fahriye ÖĞÜTGAZI UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYOctober 2006ABSTRACTIn this work the effect of various media on fluorür concentration intooth enamel depending on time have been investigated. For thispurpose tooth samples have been waited for various periods insynthetic solutions such as HCl and HAc at pH=2 and in 1x10-2, 1x10-3,1x10-4, 1x10-5 M KF solutions and also in natural solutions such as cola, lemon juice, vinegar, sugared water, tooth paste, black tea, and minttea. Fluoride concentrations have been measured by using a fluorür ionselective electrode. It was found that the fluorür present in toothpenetrated into solutions when the fluorür concentration in solutionwhere teeth samples were waiting was lower than 10-4 M. On the otherhand when the fluoride concentration was higher than 10-4M, fluorür insolution penetrated into tooth. The rate and quantity of this penetrationwas depending on the medium. While the dissolution of fluorür fromteeth was fast in short times in HCl, it was lower in organic acids suchas HAc , vinegar and lemon juice at same pH values.viIt was also observed that the dissolution of F- was faster in sugaredwater, whereas there was nearly no dissolution of F- in mint teasolution.Science Code : 201.1.004Key Words : Tooth enamel, fluoride determination, remineralization, demineralizationPage Number : 89Adviser : Assist.
