Abstract (EN)
Internet of things (IoT) is one of the most extensively used concepts that enables large numbers of connected devices to obtain data, analyse it, and utilize it. However, the increased connectivity of objects and devices in IoT brings serious environmental problems, namely those connected with power consumption and e-waste generation. This paper aims to examine the possibility of "Green IoT" which encompasses using efficient energy technologies, recycled/reusable materials, and green energy to reduce the adverse effects IoT could cause to the environment. Case studies and real-world applications are used in the research where energy-efficient designs of Green IoT technologies are studied to show that Green IoT technologies can drastically minimize energy use, control emissions, and promote a more sustainable IoT environment. Several papers have been studied and some of the areas of contribution include enabling technologies which include Green Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), energy harvester devices, low power communication protocol, all of which enable improvement of energy efficiency in the IoT systems across smart cities, healthcare, and industrial automation. Furthermore, this paper outlines key issues arising from the application of Green IoT, including lack of protocol coordination and ineffective policy measures. The results confirm Green IoT as a viable solution regarding concerns over the lack of sustainability in IoT interventions and provide potential directions and strategies for policy makers and executives on how to create a less damaging footprint of IoT while making the most of the opportunities such technologies offer for the improvement of the quality of life and the creation of sustainable development.
