Abstract (EN)
Natural disasters not only affect people directly but also threaten them due to secondary disasters caused by them. Especially destructive natural disasters can trigger CBRN risks. After floods, various chemicals can mix with flood waters and infectious diseases can emerge. After earthquakes, industrial facilities containing CBRN materials may be damaged and cause the spread of hazardous materials which may be harmful to humans and the environment. In this context, with this study, we aim to investigate the proportional distribution of natural disasters according to disaster types in Asia, Europe, and America between 1992 and 2022, the proportional distribution of industrial accidents according to disaster subtypes in terms of the number of disasters, number of deaths and number of affected people in these continents, as well as determining the top 15 countries where natural disasters and industrial accidents occur most frequently. The scope of this study is the natural disasters and industrial accidents that occurred in Asia, Europe and America between 1992 and 2022, as recorded in the EM-DAT database. Data was collected from the EM-DAT database and analyzed using SPSS 25.0. The results showed that China, Russia, Indonesia, USA, Iran, Colombia, Pakistan, Vietnam, Mexico and Turkey were among the top 15 countries in terms of both natural disasters and industrial accidents. In addition, earthquakes and floods were found to be the most frequent natural disasters in all three continents while explosions were the most frequent industrial accidents in Asia, chemical spills in Europe and America. It is concluded that preventive measures should be taken by countries which are included in both the intersection set of top 15 countries where natural disasters occur most frequently and top 15 countries where industrial accidents occur most frequently.
