The effectiveness of instruction on mand model-one of the milieu teaching techniques

This study investigates the effectiveness of an instructional program designed to teach mand-model, one of the milieu teaching techniques, to two students in speech and language therapy and one teacher working with developmentally delayed children and the effectiveness of mand-model on teaching vocabulary items to children with delayed speech and language. Furthermore, the follow-up effects of this program was also examined eight and sixteen weeks after the termination of the program. One of the single-subject research designs, multiple-probe model across subjects, was utilized to assess the effectiveness of the instructional program developed to teach mand-model, a technique in milieu teaching. The participants of the study were two students practicing at Education, Training, and Research Center for Speech and Language Disorders at Anadolu University, and one teacher workingIV with children with delayed language at the same center. Besides, three children whom these participants were working with also attended the study. Full probe, daily probe, instructional and observational sessions were conducted to assess the effectiveness of the instructional program designed to teach mand- model. All sessions were carried out on a one-to-one educational setting. Both interobserver and procedural reliability data were collected, and the effectiveness of the instructional program developed to teach mand-model was determined through graphic analysis. The findings of the study reveal that the instructional program designed to teach mand-model was effective for all participants, and that the newly-learned items were still retained eight and sixteen weeks after the termination of the program.
