Abstract (EN)

HYDRAULICS OF COMPOUND CHANNELS WITH NATURAL BEDUSING ONE DIMENSIONAL FLOW MODEL(Ph.D. Thesis)Çağlar ÖZCANGAZ UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYJanuary 2007ABSTRACTThe relationship and the interaction between the flow characteristics of mainchannel and floodplain have not taken into consideration in the research ofcompound channels with vegetative floodplain yet. In this study, therelationship and the interaction between the shape of floodplain and the slope ofmain channel embankment are also investigated in addition to shape of mainchannel. A physical model is set up and the experiments are done for the fourdifferent shapes of main channel. The velocities are measured by using a Pitottube and the wall shear stresses are computed with Patel equation. The wallshear and interface shear characteristics are calculated by using Einstein-Horton method. The lateral shear stress and the lateral velocity distributions, caused by interaction, are determined by numerical methods. The derivedlogaritmic equation which gives the Darcy-Weisbach coefficient of the interfaceshear, the lateral shear stress and velocity distribution equations which arederived from the logaritmic equation in question, are compared with the onesproposed by Pasche, Mertens and Nuding, and are carried out on theexperimental results of this study and the data of SERC-FCF. Satisfactoryresults are obtained from the derived eqautions for certain boundaryconditions.Science Code : 911.1.125Key Words : Compound channel, vegetative floodplain, interactionPage Number : 260Adviser : Prof. Dr. Tülay ÖZBEK
