Investigation of the relationship between physical activity level with work-related musculoskeletal system disorders, burnout level and job satisfaction in firefighters working in the provinces of Eastern Anatolia Region

Firefighters are individuals who work under high physical and psychological stress while dealing with events requiring emergency intervention such as fires, traffic accidents, debris and floods. This study was conducted on 285 firefighters working in the Eastern Anatolia Region and aimed to examine the relationship between physical activity level and work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD), burnout and job satisfaction. The findings of the study revealed that most of the firefighters had adequate physical activity levels, however, due to the occupational risks, WMSDs in the lower back, back and knee regions were common. It was found that emotional exhaustion and depersonalization decreased and personal accomplishment perception increased as physical activity level increased. In addition, regular physical activity was found to significantly increase both intrinsic and extrinsic job satisfaction. In conclusion, regular physical activity has positive effects on WFCL, burnout and job satisfaction by increasing occupational performance and psychological well-being in firefighters. In this context, it is recommended that regular exercise programs, ergonomic trainings and psychological support practices should be expanded in fire departments.
