IV SUMMARY Ph D Thesis OPTIMIZATION OF URBAN SOLID WASTES MANAGEMENT IN EASTERN AND SOUTHEASTERN ANATOLIA REGIONS Nilüfer (NACAR) KOÇER Fırat University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Department of Biotechnology (Environmental Technology) 1997, Page :112 During the last few years, the amount and types of both municipal and industrial solid wastes have increased gradually as a result of economical and technologicial developments. Subsequently, these wastes cause air, water and soil pollution due to uncontrolled technical and hygienic conditions. This study attempts to show how selection, planning and processing of the solid wastes storage condition is important and to find the way to decrease the effects of these wastes products at the minimum level on environment during collection, transport, storage and recycling. The ideal surveys were done at municipalities, hospitals, small industrial estates and organised industrial regions in various districts in the East (Elazığ, Malatya, Bingöl) and Southeast (Diyarbakır, Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa) regions. It was found that the used techniques for the recycle processes are not in the right way as compared to the current regulations. The cross section of the most appropriate storage method was determined for the solid wastes of both municipalities and hospitals in those districts. In addition, a central burning reactor was recommended to be establish to burn up all the wastes of hospitals. It is therefore concluded that the waste products would be reused by using a suitable recycle technique in urban areas.
