Abstract (EN)

In the face of unprecedented environmental challenges from climate change, resource depletion, biodiversity loss, and waste accumulation, the imperative for sustainable practices has never been more urgent. This thesis gets to the heart of these challenges based on traditional linear economies and underscores the urgency of a paradigm shift. It rigorously examines the environmental repercussions of the dominant "take-make-dispose" model and highlights its contribution to the growing crises. By introducing the principles of circular economy and industrial symbiosis, this research sheds light on the transformative potential of sustainable alternatives. Circular economy models, which emphasize resource conservation, product life extension, and efficient recycling, and industrial symbiosis, which promotes cross-industry cooperation for waste reduction, are emerging as crucial strategies. Through an in-depth review of case studies and rigorous analysis, this study assesses the effectiveness of circular economy and industrial symbiosis in mitigating environmental challenges. It comprehensively explains their multifaceted benefits by examining their economic viability, environmental impact, and societal implications. Furthermore, the research provides actionable recommendations for businesses and policymakers, guiding them toward integrating circular and symbiotic practices. This thesis contributes to the evolving discourse on sustainable development by providing invaluable insights for businesses, policymakers, and researchers as they seek to navigate the complex path towards a more sustainable future. By illuminating the intersection of environmental protection, economic stability, and social well-being, this study provides a solid foundation for a holistic approach to sustainability. It lays the groundwork for transformative change on a global scale.
