Examining the cartoon doru in terms of values education

Values are the historical accumulations that societies have brought so far and societies want to move to the future confidently by passing down such historical accumulations from generation to generation. Therefore, values are important for both societies and members who make up societies. To pass down national and spiritual values from generation to generation, great importance should be given to children's education. Value education begins with the family and continues with the school and social environment. With the spread of mass media, cartoons have today undertaken this task. It is thus of critical importance to analyse the content of shows aired on TV channels. The aim of this study was to explore how values are treated in the cartoon called Doru aired on the Kids Channel of the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT). The values in the cartoon Doru were analysed in relation to the following values defined as core values in the curriculum revised by the Ministry of National Education: justice, friendship, honesty, self-control, patience, respect, love, responsibility, patriotism, and helpfulness. The data were collected using document analysis, which is a form of qualitative research. Descriptive analysis was used to determine how values are treated in the cartoon Doru aired on the TRT Kids Channel and how often they are treated. The results of the analysis of the cartoon Doru showed that the most often treated value was love, followed by the values of self-control and helpfulness. The least often treated value was justice, while the value of patriotism was never treated.
