Abstract (EN)

This study constitutes a preliminary investigation aimed at determining microplastic pollution in Eğirdir Lake, one of Turkey's major freshwater resources. Surface water samples were collected during the summer and autumn seasons of 2024 from three selected stations located in the southern part of the lake (Altınkum Beach, Harbor Area, and Köprü Fishing Ground). The samples were analyzed using standard sampling protocols involving density separation, filtration, and stereomicroscopic techniques. The isolated microplastics were classified according to their morphological characteristics, and data on their type, color, and size were recorded. ATR-FTIR spectroscopy was employed to determine their chemical composition. According to the results, a total of 216 microplastic particles were identified during the summer period and 143 particles during the autumn period. The highest microplastic concentration in summer was observed in the Harbor Area, whereas in autumn it was recorded at Altınkum Beach. While both fragment and filament types were predominant in the summer, only filament types were identified in the autumn. In terms of color distribution, black and red particles were frequently observed. Polymer analysis revealed that most of the microplastics consisted predominantly of polyethylene, polystyrene, and polyethylene terephthalate. These findings indicate that increased anthropogenic activities during the summer months have a significant impact on microplastic pollution in the lake. The data obtained from this study provide a baseline for monitoring microplastic contamination in Eğirdir Lake and serve as a guiding reference for future research and environmental planning aimed at protecting freshwater ecosystems.
