Abstract (EN)

We aim to give information on the of Emet- Hisarcık region (Kutahya) travertines' geology petrography and geochemistry. On the north of the working zone, lies Tavşanlı zone; on the right of the working zone, lies Afyon zone and on the soutwest lies Menderes Massif. We can see quartenary (recent), old travertine and tufa through N-S axis Emet fault line on the working zone. These structures are known to have been developed by the thermal waters that were born from the Emet fault line. 120 pcs travertine samples are taken from 5 different areas and 46 different spots on N-S axis on the working zone. The analysis done with the samples and laboratory studies conclude that calsite is the major ruling mineral on the travertines. CaO; Boyut region ( Boyut 3 % 26,59) general (55,01 %- 56,01); over Beştaş region 4th and 5th levels ( 53,09 % - 55,87) high levels, over Yenice region it raises from 1 to 5; 6-11A levels it showed low values and raised to the top. CaO is high on Sefaköy and Uyuzhamamı regions. It is known that Boyut and Beştaş region has old travertines and and Sefaköy and Uyuzhamamı has recent travertines. The hydrothermal alteration affected travertine formation in Yeniceköy region. We have performed the following tests to understand the physical and mechanical features of the travertines and to interpret these: density, unit volume weight, visible porosity, void ratio, water absorbtion weight and water absorbtion volume, uniaxial compressive strength, abrasion value. The results have been compared to TS11143 and interpreted accordingly. Travertines do comply with TS 11143 on density, unit volume weight, porosity, water absorbtion weight, freeze-dissolve ve abrasion value, but, travertines do not comply with standarts on uniaxial compressive strenght.
