Investigation of usability of industrial wastes in GRP composite pipe production

Investigation of the recyclability of Fly Ash (FA), which is a waste of thermal power plants and produced in high amounts with increasing energy demand, is both economically and ecologically important. In this study, the usability of fly ash in the filler material used in the production of Glass fiber Reinforced Polyester (GRP) based composite pipes produced by centrifugal casting method was investigated. For this purpose, an industrial waste, FA, was used instead of silica sand by 10% and 20% by weight. GRP pipes with standard silica sand filling and GRP pipes with FA substitution filler are produced in one-to-one scale by centrifugal casting method with nominal 350 mm diameter and 6 meter length in PN 6 bar pressure class and SN 5000 N / m2 rigidity class. The changes in mechanical properties of these one-to-one scaled pipes were evaluated by means of tensile strength, axial tensile strength and rigidity tests. The findings obtained were compared with each other and the conformity of all GRP pipes to the relevant standards was evaluated. As a result, GRP pipes produced with FA substitution filler have performed according to the lower limits of the relevant standards and it has been seen that fly ash can be used in the production of GRP pipes. In addition, the thesis showed that GRP pipe industry could be an important alternative in terms of consuming industrial wastes such as the FA with useful recycling mechanisms.
