Abstract (EN)
The setting of the thesis study has been created as follows in accordance with the assessedobjective. In the first part of the study, the emerging point of industry, ?Industrial Revolution?, wasevaluated in terms of its development process and its results. The emerging ofindustrialization phenomenon and its reasons were explicated, and the influence ofindustrialization to urbanization was examined in local, social and economical contexts.Under the title of industrialization process, the industrialization process and results in Turkeywere explicated and its periodical influences were studied in order to provide a fictionalreference to the field study of the thesis. In the second part, the ?Industrial Heritage? concept comprising the structure of the thesisstudy and the reason behind its creation was considered in a theoretical paradigm. Approachesfor preservation and utilization of industrial heritage were examined and utilizationsuggestions were supported by examples from Turkey and from the rest of the world.Through the examinations made in this part, it has been assessed that there are two differentapproaches in the utilization of industrial heritage. One of them is the singular approachwhich advocates that an industrial structure having an architectural identity should bepreserved and utilized in terms of a single structure; and the other approach is theparticipatory utilization approach which defines the industrial heritage as an important part ofthe urban area and social setting and targets urban and public benefits. These two approachesdisplay different dimensions in theoretical basis and in implementation. In the protective andsingle scale utilization model, a physical renewal is targeted in consideration of architecturalvalues; and in the other approach, a functional conversion with a social participatorydimension planning the life quality of the city is embraced. With such explication of industrialheritage utilization, it is targeted to create a conceptual ground in evaluation of influences in?Renewal? setting as assessed in the objective of the thesis study. In the third part of the study, the roles of industrial heritage, examined and determined in anurban scale in previous parts, in creation of ?Urban Renewal? was explicated with anadvanced point of view. The urban renewal concept and approaches were examined; andurban renewal approaches developed in areas covering industrial heritage were evaluated indifferent aspects. In this part of the thesis study, a model is suggested which sets the urbanrenewal conversion of industrial heritage areas. With this model, criteria were defined toevaluate industrial heritage areas in an urban renewal view. In the scope of defined criteria, efforts were made for development of local-regional analysis and evaluation dimensionswithin the process of renewal of industrial heritage areas in terms of urban planningapproaches. In the comprised model, the dynamics constituting the renewal with regard toregional potentials and targets were examined; and it was targeted to introduce renewalapproaches and adopt fundamental principles which can provide total continuity andcontribute to the creation of urban culture. In the fourth part, the approach of industrial heritage areas? evaluation in an urban renewalview was tested in the sample of City of Odemis which constitutes the field study of thethesis. Odemis was selected as the sample due to its central position in Kucuk Menderes basinand as it exhibits the industrial structure of the Aegean Region. With the developments in 1930s, Odemis became one of the first modern cities of TurkishRepublic. In Odemis, having an economy mostly based on agricultural production, thedevelopment of industry had been very slow; and factories did not appear in the city until1950s. It possesses an industrial heritage potential which lost its function and open forutilization upon growth of the city center and overflow of the industry to suburbs.Through the approach model which targets to evaluate the industrial heritage areas of Odemison the basis of social, cultural and economical dimensions within the urban renewal scope, thephysical data of Odemis originating from its background was tested in terms of preservingsocial life?s continuity and its availability in renewal of industrial heritage areas. Efforts weremade to make the model have an identity which is adaptable to general industrial heritageareas. In the final part of the examination, an urban renewal scenario was created for the City ofOdemis which fits the criteria of proposed model and was selected as the sample.Assumptions were developed and theoretical based suggestions were given emphasizing theurban identity of Odemis and aiming to its evaluation by an urban renewal approach withsocial inheritance and continuity in the 21st century. Keywords: Industrial heritage, industrial archaeology, urban renewal, odemis.
