ABSTRACT PhD Thesis AN INVESTIGATION OF ENERGY DAMPING RATIOS OF DIFFERENT TYPE ENERGY DISSIPATOR BLOCKS IN STILLING BASIN Nihat Kaya Fırat University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Department of Civil Engineering 2003, Page: 101 Hydraulic jump is the best way of the energy dissipation by using hydraulic principles. Hydraulic structures organizing this phenomenon are called stilling basin. However, baffle blocks being a member of stilling basins are quite important for breaking of flow energy. The baffle blocks are embedded in stilling basin in order to obtain hydraulic jump, increase turbulence and decrease the existence energy. The aim of this study is to investigate the breaking of the flow energy in bottom weirs. In all experimental series, the total length of all baffle blocks are taken width of stilling basin of 40%. Froude numbers and water heights of upstream are adjusted about from 2.5 to 4.5 and from 0.10 to 0.26 m, respectively. The gate opening ratio is taken 0.04 m in the present work. Moreover, twenty-one baffle blocks with identical surface length, but of distinct geometry, are used. The energy damping ratios of these blocks are determined by embedding single row. Consequently, it is estimated that baffle blocks with T and pentagon shapes give the best results according to the energy damping ratios. The T shaped block decreases the energy by striking while the pentagon shaped by separating. In addition to this, the T and pentagon shaped blocks were arranged as double row and energy damping ratios were calculated. Finally, it is noticed that single row T and pentagon shaped baffle blocks have more ability of energy damping.
