Abstract (EN)

THE INVESTIGATION OF HEAVY METAL ACCUMULATION OF FISHES IN ENNEDAME LAKEEsengül KÖSEDeparment of Biology, M.S. Thesis, 2007Thesis Supervisor: Assoc. Yrd. Doç. Dr. Kazim UYSALSUMMARYMetal accumulation ratios of various tissues (muscle, gill, skin, intestine and liver) ofCarassius carassius Linnaeus,1758, Chondrostoma nasus Linnaeus, 1758, Leuciscus cephalusLinnaeus, 1758, Alburnus alburnus Linnaeus, 1758, Cyprinus carpio Linnaeus, 1758, in EnneDame Lake fed with Ilıca hot spring water (in Kütahya) were investigated. The analyses of Cu,Zn, Mn, Ni, Fe, Ca, Mg, Cr, Co, Pb and B were performed with Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and Cd with Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer(AAS) after microwave digestion techniques. The units of each element was reported as a mgkg-1 (wet weight). Pb and B were not determined in any tissues or organs of the investigatedspecies in this study. In generally, it was found that the metal accumulation levels of edibleportions (muscle and skin) were lower than other tissues. The Cd accumulation in the muscletissue of Carassius carassius was higher than the level reported by Turkish Food Codes. Thelevels of Cu and Zn in all tissues and organs of Carassius carassius were also higher than otherspecies. Therefore none of the species studied here, except Carassius carassius, presents a riskfactor for human health in terms of heavy metal accumulation. The mean metal amounts of allinvestigated tissues and species were also statistically analysed and discussed in the presentstudy.Key Words: AAS, Enne Dame Lake, fish, Heavy metal, ICP-OES, organ, tissue
