Genotoxic and antigenotoxic effects of (-)-epigallocatechine gallate and caffeic acid phenetyl ester

Abstract (EN)
In this study, in vitro genotoxic and antigenotoxic effects of (-)-epigallocatechine gallate (EGCG) and caffeic acid phenetyl ester (CAPE) against MMC and H2O2 induced genotoxicity were investigated by using chromosome aberrations (CAs), sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs), micronuclei (MN) and comet assay. EGCG and CAPE were not significantly genotoxic alone. When they were used togehter with mutagens, in CA test, EGCG potantiated chromosome aberrations, however, CAPE showed anticlastogenic effect. While both polyphenols showed antimutagenic and anticlastogenic effect in SCE and MN assay, they have protective effect in primer DNA damage at lower concentrations whereas they increased DNA damage in higher concentrations. In addition, both polyphenols have antimitotic effect.
