Investigation of the relationship between adolescents' perceived helicopter parental attitudes and psychological resilience levels

During adolescence, a period of intense uncertainty, the way people communicate with their parents and their environment changes. These changes are thought to lead to some differences in the attitudes of parents towards their children. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between helicopter parenting attitudes, which is a new concept in our country, and psychological resilience of adolescents. The study group of the research consists of 717 (457 female, 260 male) high school students studying in 3 different secondary education institutions in Esenyurt district of Istanbul province during the 2022-2023 academic year. The "Personal Information Form" prepared by the researcher was used to collect the information of the participants, the "Perceived Helicopter Parent Scale" developed by Yılmaz (2019) to determine the perceived helicopter parent attitude, and the "Child and Youth Psychological Resilience Scale" adapted into Turkish by Arslan (2015) to determine the level of psychological resilience. SPSS 22 package program was used for statistical analysis of the data obtained within the scope of the research. Independent sample t test to test whether there is a significant difference between high school students' gender and their level of perceiving their parents as helicopter parents and their level of psychological resilience, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) to test whether there is a significant difference between high school students' school types, grade level, economic level, parents' education level and their level of perceiving their parents as helicopter parents, Pearson correlation analysis was used to test the relationship between perceived helicopter parent attitudes and psychological resilience, multiple linear regression analysis was used to test the level of prediction of psychological resilience by perceived helicopter parent attitudes and its sub-dimensions. As a result of the analyses, male high school students perceive their mothers as helicopter parents more than female high school students; male high school students have significantly higher levels of psychological resilience than female high school students; imam hatip high school students who have helicopter mothers are helicopter parents more than students in an Anatolian high school and vocational technical high school students are helicopter parents more than imam hatip high school students in terms of academic-school life; perceived helicopter parenting did not show a significant difference according to grade level and economic level; high school graduate mothers were found to be more helicopter parenting than primary school graduate mothers; there was a significant positive relationship between psychological resilience and perceived helicopter parenting attitude; helicopter mother ethical and moral life, academic-school life, emotional relational life sub-dimensions and helicopter father, basic trust, emotional relational life sub-dimensions predicted psychological resilience.
