Analyzing accessibility in modern art museums: A case study of the İŞstanbul modern art museum

Accessibility is considered not only a technical design principle in contemporary architecture and urban planning but also one of the fundamental elements of social equality and spatial justice. This thesis examines accessibility in modern art museums through physical, visual, auditory, and digital dimensions, presenting a comprehensive evaluation based on the case of the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art. The research is grounded in data obtained from literature review, interviews conducted with non-governmental organizations, and field observations. In the study, accessibility components were consolidated from both literature and user experiences and evaluated through systematically prepared tables. These tables intersect academic knowledge with practical user experience, thereby constituting the original contribution of this study. The Istanbul Museum of Modern Art was chosen as the case study, and the analysis focused on aspects such as environmental accessibility, interior spatial organization, common areas, information, and wayfinding systems. As a result, this study approaches accessibility with a holistic perspective, offering both theoretical and practical guidance for modern art museums, while also providing societal contribution.
