Osteoporosis risk factors and association with somatotypes in males

ABSTRACTOSTEOPOROSIS RISK FACTORS AND ASSOCIATIONWITHSOMATOTYPES IN MALESOsteoporosis is a systemic and metabolic skeletal disease characteried withreduced bone mass, changes in micro-architecture and resultand increased fragility. Inthis study, we assessed osteoporosis risk factors and the association with somatotypes inmales aged 45-65 years.Seventy individuals aged 45-65 who had no history of metabolic and endocrindiseases were included into the study. Standard axial spine and proximal femur bonemineral density (BMD) were measured using dual x-ray (DXA) absorptiometry. Heath-Carter procedure was followed to assess individual?s somatotypes. Measurements wereperformed and noted by the same clinician.All body types were groupped as endomorphy, mesomorphy and ectomorphy.Statistically significant difference was found between lomber BMD with endomorphyand mesomorphy. Negative correlation was found between lombar BMD andektomorphy. Total femur BMD correlated positively with endomorphy andmesomorphy and negatively correlated with ektomorphy. Lumbar BMD and age, handgrip strength, smoking, tea and coffee comsumption, calorie expenditure, calciumintake, PTH, albumine, total protein, SHBG and testesterone were not significantlycorrelated.Somatotypes as endomorphy, mesomorphy and ektomorphy are closelycorrelated with osteoporosis and should be taken into accound while assessing riskfactors for osteoporosis.Key words: Osteoporosis, male, risk factors, somatotype, bone mineraldensity.
