A comparative study on the old Turkic and Yakut words starting with vowels

This study aims at comparing the vocabulary of the old Turkic, known as a period lasted from 8th to 13th centuries, to the vocabulary of Yakut language. The data is limited to the words whose initial sounds are vowels. This group of words includes both the stems and the derivated forms. The main criteria for choosing Yakut language as a means of comparison is that it separated from the common Turkic family long ago hence it still possesses many archaic features. Dolgan vocabulary was also included although it represents some phonetic and morphological differences in word formation. The results of the study shows that 2150 out of total 2600 words from Old Turkic Period do not survive in Yakut and Dolgan. The distrubition of the non existing words is as follows: The highest amount of these non exsisting words belong to Karakhanid texts with total 990 words. There are approximately 760 words that appeared only in old Uighur texts. The amount of words that appeared in both Old Uighur and Karakhanid texts is 450 out of 2600. There are total 450 words that still survive in Yakut and/or Dolgan. A considerable amount of surviving words (140) first appears in Old Uighur and in Karakhanid texts in the following periods. There are total 130 words that appear only in Karahanid texts. Another finding is that there are total 60 words that appeared only in Uyghur texts and do not exist in any of the texts from old Turkic period. These words also survive in Yakut and Dolgan.
