Abstract (EN)

The question of what is time is a question that thinkers have been trying to answer for centuries. Time appears as a concept debatable and reviewable in many aspects in all fields of positive and social sciences. The research is based on the use of words that make up the concept of time in Old Turkic and meet the meanings of time, moment, sometimes, always, never, before, after and again in historical texts, their semantic relations with each other, their change in language history and their development in today's Turkish languages. The appearance and continuity of the words in the old Turkish time concept in today's Turkish languages are examined. These words, which indicate the time in Old Turkic, are compared with Chinese and Arabic words in translated texts. As a result of the research, within the scope of the scanned texts in Orkhon Turkish, Uyghur Turkish and Karakhanid Turkish, 141 words that determine the concept of time in Old Turkic are determined. Additionally, it is determined that 36 of these words express the meaning of time. Also, 4 of these words mean moment, 2 of these mean sometimes; 34 of them mean always; 2 of them mean never; 36 of them mean before; 16 of them mean after; 5 of them mean now and 6 of them mean again. The words that can be traced from the beginning in Orkhon, Uighur and Karakhanid Turkish and that take place in all three periods are determined as ara, aşnu, erte, ilki, ugur, üd, yme and yana. Keywords: time, old turkic, buddhism, manichaeism, islam
