The European global climate policy: the analysis of the interplaybetween normative and geopolitical tools and objectives

The multipolar turn of world politics in the 21st century created challenges and openings for the traditional powers. The pandemic triggered a new perception of nature, engendering many discussions about sustainable development. The EU, traditionally constructed as a normative power, adjusted its global climate policy to current geopolitical realities. Commission President von der Leyen declared her decision to steer the EU's global policy towards geopolitical thinking in 2019. The ambitions to lead the global direction of sustainable development are reified under the European Green Deal aiming to make Europe the first carbon neutral continent by 2050. This thesis analyses the historical evolution of the geopolitical and normative global climate policy tools and objectives of the EU and their connections with Russian global climate policy under the UN. It analyses the use of these tools and iteration of these objectives under European speeches and statements during COPs and State of the Union Addresses.
