Evaluation of total serum antioxidant and some biochemical parameters in women with osteoporosis

Abstract (EN)
Background and objectives: Osteoporosis is a condition of increased bone loss, which leads to increased bone fragility and a marked increase in the risk of fractures. Oxidative stress has been proved involved in bone resorption. Therefore, this research aims at comparing the serum levels of total antioxidative status between women with and without osteoporosis. Moreover, the influence of vitamin D, calcium, vitamin B12, and folic acid were also examined. Methods: 106 females who attended the Duhok rheumatoid center and conducted bone densitometry participating in this cross-sectional survey. The liver diseases, metabolic bone diseases, chronic kidney diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, chronic inflammation, thalassemia, cancer, and patients who were taking antioxidant or hormone replacement therapy where prevented or excluded from the study. A research questionnaire was used to organize contributors with the required information. By using automated Cobas 6000, serum total vitamin D, serum calcium, vitamin B12, folic acid levels were determined and the total antioxidant level was determined by spectrophotometer. Results: In osteoporotic individuals, mean values levels for total antioxidant and folic acid were significantly decrease compared with the control group. The vitamin B12 and calcium levels were not changed. Vitamin D did not demonstrate any large variation among the study population in groups with a high incidence of vitamin D insufficiency. The total antioxidant level positively corresponded with total bone mineral density in the entire study population as stated by Pearson correlation analysis. In the sample of women; age was negatively related to total bone mineral density, also in this investigation population body mass index was positively related to total bone mineral density. The folic acid in the patients were positively corresponded. Conclusions: The study findings of this survey demonstrate that oxidative stress may be a consequential indicator of bone loss in postmenopausal women.
