Abstract (EN)

Throughout human history, music has been ubiquitous across almost every belief system. Within the Turkish-Islamic civilization, Turkish religious music has evolved, drawing inspiration from the practices of the Prophet, and continues to thrive. According to tradition, music plays a vital role in fostering a sense of peace and spirituality during collective worship in mosques. Over centuries, music has played a significant role in enhancing spiritual experiences. However, the contemporary implementation of music in mosque worship varies, with a noticeable discrepancy between central mosques and others: its incorporation often lacks intentionality. Consequently, community responses have manifested in two primary ways: some individuals prefer to pray at home rather than attend mosques, while others lodge complaints with religious authorities regarding the quality of mosque music or the recitation of the call to prayer. This underscores the importance of skilled religious officials who possess both talent and expertise are crucial in ensuring the quality and authenticity of musical performances within mosques. The focus of this research lies in exploring the impact of musical training on religious officials. It aims to compare the practices of trained religious officials versed in mosque music, including the performance of ezan, kâmet, and tesbihat, with those who lack such training. By adopting a situational and relational approach, the study seeks to unveil the various methods used by these officials in executing these sacred duties. To understand the role of musical education for Imam-Hatip and muezzin-trustees in mosques, it was deemed essential to investigate their approach to mosque music and style. A comprehensive study was conducted utilizing a mixed-methods approach, integrating literature review and field research. Following a thorough review of relevant literature, the study involved the participation of five religious officials who underwent music education in Turkey, alongside five counterparts who had not received any formal musical training. Recordings of their performances of ezan, kâmet, and tesbihat were transcribed into musical notation, allowing for a detailed analysis. The findings revealed notable distinctions between the vocal styles, modes, and emotions employed by officials with and without musical education. Specifically, officials with musical training demonstrated greater vocal versatility and emotional depth, resulting in harmonious performances. In contrast, those without musical education exhibited less variation in vocal styles during their performances. Additionally, this study examined the contemporary usage of modes in mosque music and provided detailed insights into their application. The requirements and conventions associated with each mode were elucidated through musical notation and exemplified with concrete examples. Furthermore, the tradition of mosque music was explored, highlighting the distinction between recognized forms such as ezan and kâmet, and the separate form of tesbihat. This distinction was underscored through textual analysis, supported by examples and musical annotations.
